Graduate Medical Education

Goal: 1.1 entry-level residency positions for each graduating medical student.
  • Texas desperately needs more residency training slots to keep up with our booming populations and rapid growth of our medical school classes and creation of new medical schools.
  • Texas needs to increase residencies to ensure we have enough slots to retain our medical school graduates.
  • To meet the 1.1 goal, we need to add almost 600 GME positions by the year 2022.

Last session, the legislature added enough money to add up to 125 NEW slots and keep the ones added in 2013. The legislature created a permanent endowment of roughly $300 million to help expand GME starting in 2018.
